Renue is an ethical, European marketplace for sustainable brands. After an email questioning our sustainability standards, we now only accept certifies natural cosmetics.

We’ve recently made a big decision. And it wasn’t easy.

Renue is an ethical, European marketplace for sustainable brands. And if you’ve been following along, you know we received an email about two months ago, questioning our sustainability standards, particularly around cosmetics. That email? It made us pause, reflect… and get to work. (Read the full article here).

Unpacking the complexities of cosmetic ingredients and regulation

Since then, we’ve spoken with Mark Smith, Director General at NATRUE – The International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, Nuria Alonso from Certificación BioVidaSana, and had some great conversations with brands like Omamori, who are already certifying part of their products and doing things by the book. One thing quickly became very clear: cosmetics is a tricky world. Ingredients, regulation, transparency… it’s a lot.

So hence our decision: only certified cosmetic products will be accepted on Renue.

Our new standard: Why certified cosmetics only

Not because we want to be exclusive or make things harder. But because we know what we don’t know. We’re not chemists. We’re not a certification body. And frankly, we don’t want to become one either.

What we do want, is to collaborate with experts who’ve already done the homework; people and organisations we trust, who share our values and vision. Because we believe in teaming up with those who know their stuff. That’s why we’re proud to be working with certification bodies like Certificación BioVidaSana and NATRUE, and currently in the talks with COSMOS-standard AISBL and brands like Botanik Skin Natural Cosmetics, VerbelBio, Aina de Mô, OMAMORI BEAUTY TALISMAN, y AYLANABIO.

We’re all about progress, not perfection

Also: we’re not just sticking certification logos onto our site. We’ll be adding explanations of what these certifications actually mean. Because let’s be honest, if we get confused sometimes, imagine what it’s like for the end consumer. We feel it’s our job to bring clarity and trust to the table.

To those brands who’ve invested the time (and let’s be real, money) to get certified: we see you. We want to support you. This decision is for you.

And to those still on the path: we’re here to help guide and connect you with people who can support your process. We’re all about progress, not perfection.

What’s next?

So now we’re turning it over to you: Which certification bodies should we talk to next? Which sector should we tackle? We’re thinking fashion? Oh boy… what a jungle. But we’re motivated and committed. Even if it means growing slow, we’re in this for the long run.

In a world where sustainability is no longer a luxury but a necessity, choosing the right platform to buy and sell responsibly has never been more important. At RENUE, we’re on a mission to provide a sustainable marketplace that not only connects brands and consumers but also cares for the environment. In this post, we explain why RENUE is the best choice for eco-conscious consumers and brands looking to make a positive impact.

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Green Energy

At RENUE, we believe that every step we take should contribute to a more sustainable future. That’s why our platform runs entirely on 100% renewable energy. But how do we achieve this? We work with trusted data centers powered by green energy providers. Two major names in the industry, whose commitment to sustainability align with our mission, power our platform.

One of our servers uses hydropower in Germany and a combination of hydropower and wind power in Finland. This ensures that all energy used to support RENUE’s marketplace is sourced from renewable sources, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of every transaction.

How Does This Help the Environment?

Why is it so important to run on renewable energy? Well, data centers are responsible for storing, processing, and delivering all of the website’s data. These data centers require vast amounts of energy—estimated to account for 1% of global electricity consumption, leading to high CO2 emissions.

When you choose RENUE, you are supporting a green marketplace that minimizes these environmental impacts. We prioritize sustainability, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the tech industry and e-commerce. Every purchase made on RENUE is a step toward a cleaner, greener internet.

Why RENUE Is the Sustainable Choice for Brands and Consumers

When you choose RENUE as your marketplace, you’re not just making a purchase. You’re part of a larger movement to reduce carbon emissions and support eco-friendly brands. Here’s why RENUE is the best choice:

100% Renewable Energy: RENUE is powered by green electricity, ensuring every transaction is environmentally friendly.

Sustainable Operations: Our platform operates with minimal environmental impact, from energy-efficient data centers to carbon-neutral operations.

Supporting Eco-Conscious Brands: RENUE offers a marketplace where brands committed to sustainability can grow and thrive without worrying about hefty fees. We help them reduce their carbon footprint, one product at a time.

The Impact of Green Energy in E-Commerce

By choosing 100% renewable energy, RENUE aligns with global sustainability efforts. We ensure that our energy consumption is sourced from clean, renewable sources, which helps mitigate the climate impact caused by traditional power sources. Moreover, we also help offset the carbon footprint from the tech industry, one of the largest contributors to global CO2 emissions.

Our green energy commitment supports hydropower and wind power, two of the most effective and scalable forms of renewable energy. This not only helps reduce emissions but also encourages more sustainable practices within the e-commerce and tech industries.

Join RENUE: Make a Difference One Purchase at a Time

Choosing RENUE means making a difference in the world of e-commerce. By supporting our sustainable marketplace, you contribute to a cleaner planet. Whether you’re a brand looking to reduce your environmental impact or a consumer passionate about buying eco-friendly products, RENUE is here to help you make that difference.

When you visit renue.eco, you’re not just seeing a web address—you’re seeing a statement of our values.

What Is a Top-Level Domain (TLD)?

Every URL you visit consists of key components that serve specific functions:

Protocol: This defines how information is transmitted. At Renue, we use HTTPS, which includes SSL encryption to ensure that all data shared on our platform—between you, buyers, and sellers—is secure and private.

Domain Name: This is the identity of the website and includes:

Second-Level Domain (SLD) – in our case, “renue”

Top-Level Domain (TLD) – the extension “.eco”

Together, these form our full domain: renue.eco

What Does .eco Stand For?

The .eco domain extension is unlike most others. It’s a restricted TLD, meaning it’s only available to companies and organisations committed to sustainability and positive environmental impact.

Before receiving approval, domain applicants must:

Pledge to support positive change for the planet

Share their environmental goals and actions

Align with the .eco community standards

The .eco domain is operated by Big Room Inc. and supported by over 40 respected environmental groups including WWF, Ocean Conservancy, y Greenpeace.

Even more impressively, .eco is the first domain extension to be PAS 2060 certified as carbon neutral—a perfect fit for a platform like Renue, which exists to amplify sustainable brands and ethical businesses across Europe and beyond.

Why It Matters

At Renue, we’re not just another marketplace—we’re building a community-led digital ecosystem for sustainable living. Every decision we make, from technology to partnerships, aligns with our vision of a more ethical and responsible future.

Choosing a .eco domain is our way of showing that we walk the talk.

What is a Circular Economy?

The circular economy represents a transformative approach to how we produce and consume goods. Unlike the traditional linear model—where resources are extracted, used, and discarded—a circular economy views resources as renewable. Instead of manufacturing products for single use, this system designs them for reuse, repair, and recycling, ensuring materials remain in the economy as long as possible. In essence, it’s about eliminating waste and making sustainability the foundation of progress.

Why Adopt a Circular Economy?

This innovative model offers far-reaching advantages for the environment, economy, and consumers:

Environmental Benefits: Circular practices can reduce CO2 emissions from manufacturing by up to 70%. In the fashion industry alone, this could save 1.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases annually by minimizing the need for virgin raw materials.

Economic Growth: Transitioning to circular systems fosters job creation in areas such as design, repair, and recycling. Studies show it can significantly lower unemployment rates by introducing roles that prioritize sustainability over extraction-based industries.

Consumer Value: Products in a circular economy are designed to last longer, be repairable, and avoid planned obsolescence. This means extended lifespans for goods and reduced overall costs for consumers.

How Does renue.eco Support the Circular Economy?

At Renue, we’re passionate about driving the shift to a circular economy in practical, impactful ways. Here’s how:

Repair Services for Longevity
We connect you with local clothing repair experts, helping you extend the life of your garments. By repairing just 1 kilogram of clothing, you can prevent up to 20 kilograms of CO2 emissions. It’s a small step with a significant impact.

Empowering Thrift and Second-Hand Shopping
Purchasing second-hand clothing isn’t just affordable—it’s a direct contribution to sustainability. For every 20 second-hand items you buy, you help save the resources needed to produce 10 new garments. We provide a curated guide to thrift stores, making it easy to donate your pre-loved clothes and discover unique, sustainable fashion finds near you.

Promoting Upcycling
Even when clothes can’t be resold, their materials can find new life. From rags to repurposed products, the possibilities are endless. By supporting second-hand markets, you’re helping ensure textiles are used to their fullest potential.

Even though it might sound absolutey counterintuitive for an e-commerce platform, we’re not here to simply push more products into your life; instead, we aim to inspire thoughtful choices when you do decide to buy something. Whether it’s a personal treat or a gift for a loved one, we invite you to reflect on the impact of your spending. Yes, each purchase through Renue is a step towards supporting small, sustainable businesses and contributing to a fairer, more equitable society. But we’d love for you to stop and think for a second if what you’re buying is something that will add real value to your life. We urge you to choose wisely, because with every euro you spend, you cast a vote for our future.

Somehow over the past fews years, the words “sustainable,” “green,” and “eco-friendly” have become commonplace, often losing their true essence. At Renue, our ambition extends beyond these labels as we strive to evolve into a regenerative e-commerce platform. While “regenerative” is a term gaining interest, for us, it’s about maintaining transparency and shared values. This journey isn’t about self-congratulation – it’s about learning together, with you, our community. Because what does being a regenerative e-commerce platform entail? We’re not 100% clear on that one either yet, but it’s a question we’re committed to exploring!

We do know we want to go beyond achieving carbon neutrality; our aim is to ensure our platform actively contributes back to the environment and society. It’s a bold challenge, but one we eagerly embrace alongside you. To that respect, the digital realm plays a crucial part in sustainability, and at present, we feel is still often overlooked. And yet, its impact is profound. As we hold our brands to high sustainability standards, it felt logical for us to ensure our platform exemplifies these values. And we hope to inspire others to consider the digital world’s role in achieving a regenerative future. Yep, it’s daunting challenge to say the least, but we’re eager to embrace it.

At Renue we very much believe in the power of community, so we designed our platform not just as a marketplace, but as a safe haven for small sustainable brands and the passionate individuals who bring them to life. Behind every brand, there’s a story, and a person who started it all. Our role is to nurture these narratives and create a space where they can flourish.

Our journey with Renue towards becoming a regenerative platform is just beginning. We invite you to accompany us and be part of this transformative experience. And let’s be salesy for a second here… We’d love for you to subscribe to our newsletter for updates, insights and stories from our community. Because together, we can redefine what e-commerce means, creating meaningful change that benefits both people and the planet. After all, change starts with individuals like you, making conscious choices that ripple outwards.
